In an Actor’s Conversation
Singapore, 7 October 2015 – A new programme has been created by The Arts House. Called In an Actor’s Conversation, it is a series of intimate dialogue with distinguished actors Oliver Chong, Yeo Yann Yann and Nelson Chia.
Theatre making is a fine and complex art that runs deeper than memorising lines on a script. In Towards a Poor Theatre, Polish theatre director and theorist Jerzy Grotowski centred the art of theatre making on the skills of the actor. This art is built upon the relationship forged between the actor and the audience within a specific time and space, as every gesture and movement on stage stimulate and create drama.
The format of In an Actor’s Conversation is inspired by the American television series, Inside the Actor’s Studio. Each actor will chat and share about his or her theatre career on specific sets of questions designed for the interviewees to demonstrate their inner state of mind and of course acting skills. The sessions will be conducted in Mandarin.
“There are many forms of theatre training, each technically and mentally demanding. Our guests cut their teeth in the Singapore theatre scene and achieved tremendous accolades. Aspiring actors and theatre lovers will enjoy the genuine conversations and hear first-hand each actor talk about his or her works in theatre and on screen, and of the stoic journey which is accompanied by words of theatre masters and literature. As an institution committed to the arts, The Arts House finds ways to fulfil the needs of its audience sensitively with new ideas and ideas borrowed. We are privileged to have three brilliant actors to share with us their dedication and passion for the theatre,” says Lee Chor Lin, Chief Executive Officer of Arts House Limited.
Each session will be moderated by an established arts personality to bring the actors through an authentic conversation. Chor Lin will moderate the sessions with Yeo Yann Yann and Nelson Chia. Theatre director-writer-actor, Danny Yeo, will moderate Oliver Chong’s session.
Nelson Chia is one of the most sought-after bilingual male actors in Singapore, taking on leading or major roles in both English and Mandarin stage productions. Nelson has been training regularly in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training and Viewpoints since 2008, and had studied the methods with Saratoga International Theatre Institute (SITI) in New York and the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT) in Japan.
Multi-talented Oliver Chong is one of Singapore's most versatile directors/playwrights/actors. He has been nominated several times for his acting and directorial efforts at The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. In 2011, he won ‘Production of the Year’ for A Cage Goes in Search of a Bird with his actors’ collective, A Group of People. In 2013, he won ‘Production of the Year’ and ‘Best Script’ for Roots.
