Play Den Productions To Premiere At The Arts House In August
A new series of theatre productions with a local touch and an international appeal showcased at The Arts House over the next three years
Singapore, 11 June 2009 – The Arts House and Orangedot Management (ODM) is embarking on a new collaboration that will see the birth of a new series of theatre productions showcasing at The Arts House’s Play Den. To kick things off, The Arts House and ODM are organising a Backer’s Audition on 11 and 12 June, 7pm at The Arts House to raise funds to bring the new series, Play Den Productions to the stage.
An intimate evening of good company and theatre, the Backer's Audition is our way of welcoming our supporters and friends including potential sponsors back into the folds of Singapore theatre productions. A labour of love and collaboration between some of the most dedicated and talented people in the theatre community, the Backer’s Audition will also provide a sneak preview of the four productions from the inaugural season of the Play Den Productions, which starts from August this year.
Hemmed by Artistic Curator Jeremiah Choy, Play Den Productions is unique and different from other theatre companies. Unlike an artistic director of a theatre company whose sole artistic vision dictates the creative process and end results of a production, the Artistic Curator for Play Den Productions combines various creative inputs from talented individuals and teases the best out of it. The end result is a distinctively unique theatre production that will not define or stereotype Play Den Productions.
A three-year exploratory process to source, curate and develop new productions, the Play Den Productions will identify and collaborate with established and emerging directors, playwrights, actors and theatre designers to create new productions with local content but with a global perspective to appeal to the international audiences. Running for three seasons from August 2009 to March 2012, four to six productions will be chosen for each season. Successful productions will then be turned to repertory pieces and sustaining high quality productions throughout each season. These productions will also be marketed to tourists and hence creating Singapore’s own brand of Broadway or West End; and eventually, be given the opportunity to be exported to other regional and international platforms.
For the inaugural season 2009/2010, the Play Den Productions will explore the theme “Back to Soul” where the soul of theatre is the creators and the productions are about exploring, experimenting and evolving with the playwrights, directors and actors. It is thus apt to start the journey by looking within.
Four productions have been selected for the first season with Salusuah being the first to be staged in the Play Den Productions from 13 to 22 August. Thereafter, viewers can catch three other productions – These Children are Dead (1 – 10 Oct), Devil’s Encore (25 Nov – 3 Dec) and finally, A Christmas Adam (21 – 27 Dec).
Mr Jeremiah Choy, Artistic Curator for Play Den Productions says: "I feel there is a void in small intimate productions in Singapore. I miss the black box productions that I have seen, experienced and participated in. Productions that speak to the audience with its good script, acting and directing. Productions that are earnest, truthful and sincere, minus the bright lights, glitzy sets and glamorous costumes. Productions that are modest, mobile and yet mesmerising. I would like to revisit and recreate those moments and hopefully, bring soul back to the theatre I know."
Mr Colin Goh, General Manager of The Arts House adds: “We are delighted to be working with Orangedot on this series and be part of a theatrical discovery of new works waiting to be unveiled. Here we are together providing a new platform and more avenues for our local theatre community to showcase their works and talents. With Orangedot’s curatorial expertise and our resources, Play Den Productions is set to be a highlighted feature at The Arts House and something to look forward to over the next three years.”
