The Cultural Experience of Post -80s artists in China: three from the next generation in Singapore
12 January 2012, Singapore - Three emerging and up- and -coming Chinese artists will be in Singapore as part of a two week long exhibition titled Savor: The Cultural Experience of Post-80s Artists in China at The Arts House that presents the cultural experiences of the younger generation of artists from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China’s oldest art academy of higher learning.
The three artists are Xingxin (b. 1981), Yudu (b. 1980) and Qiuxia, all who with the exception of Xingxin, are predominantly known in China and have not exhibited outside the East Asia region. Although a sculptor by training, Xingxin has gained exposure through his performance works that developed from his investigations as a sculptor into more complex installations that explore concept of time, space, and existence. Savor: The Cultural Experience of Post-80s Artists in China will feature three of Xingxin’s sculptures.
The exhibition, which will see close to 60 paintings and fourteen sculptures, will also feature the works of five other artists: Zhang zhenxue, Guowei, Tianxia, Li binbin and Zenglinxing.
Says co-organiser of the exhibition, Tan Kuan Yew, Regional Representative of Tank Loft Chongqing Contemporary Art Centre and Regional Representative of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, one of China’s famous eight art colleges: “As one of the key aims of the exhibition is to feature the new generation of Chinese artists and their interpretations of contemporary life and issues, the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute is proud to have eight of its alumni in this event.
“As most of the artists featured in this exhibition are still rising stars within China’s visual arts scene and primarily still only widely-known within China, we have selected these artists as we believe that in the near future they will be in the forefront of contemporary Chinese art and their works highly sought after.”
The works by the eight artists range from the playful to the serious and contemplative and the subject matter and techniques employ either challenging traditional frameworks and concepts or present bold and insightful critique of contemporary society.
Savor: The Cultural Experience of Post-80s Artists in China is on at The Arts House from 11 Jan until 31 January. Contact 6332-6900 for exhibition details.
